Circuit Judge Kathy King Jackson ordered Brown, 35, to servethe remainder of his sentence under post-release supervision and to pay a totalof $4,750 in fines.
Brown pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery in July.He entered into a plea agreement with the state, something the Jackson CountyDistrict Attorney's Office has said the student wanted to avoid the"trauma of trial."
Brown was teaching seventh-grade math and coaching whenauthorities said he had a sexual relationship with a then-13-year-old studentfor four months, ending in April 2011.
An investigation began after Ocean Springs police receivedan anonymous tip. Police interviewed several students who were aware of Brown'sinvolvement with the girl or had overheard conversations about Brown and thegirl having sex. Brown initially claimed he and his wife were good friends withthe girl's family and the allegations were false. The girl and her mominitially verified the information to a school officer, but police laterconfirmed the allegations of criminal sexual misconduct on Brown's part.
"We send our children to school to learn, to be caredfor, and protected," Jackson County Assistant District Attorney AngelMyers said after Brown's sentencing. "Mr. Brown abused his authority andposition of trust over this child for his own sexual gratification.
"I am proud that the victim had the courage to comeforward and proud that our legal system afforded her justice. We will nottolerate teachers or any other individuals abusing our children."
District Attorney Tony Lawrence said, "The defendant tookadvantage of his position of authority and trust as a teacher and his actions, essentially took away part of this child's childhood and innocence."
