South Carolina attorney indicted for mail fraud-extortion www.privateofficer.com


LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC Sept 21 2012Mail fraud and extortion are just two accusations beinglobbed at a well-known Lexington County attorney in anindictment delivered by the federal grand jury on Wednesday.According to the indictment, Richard Breibart has been hitwith four counts of mail fraud, five counts of extortion under the Hobbs Act,and wire transmission in furtherance of scheme.
Breibart, a 30-year legal veteran, is accused of defraudingclients, former clients and their family members out of hundreds of thousandsof dollars.
Prosecutors say Breibart would lead his victims to believethey were under a criminal investigation and in danger of losing their assets.They say Breibart told them to put the money in his trust account forprotection. Instead, prosecutors say Breibart used that money for himself.
In some cases, prosecutors say Breibart extorted money thathis victims pulled from their retirement savings.
Breibart's law license was suspended by the state SupremeCourt several months ago. The court also ordered appointment of a trustee toprotect Breibart's clients and prohibited him from accessing any of theoffice's accounts.
