
Atlanta Police have confirmed that two officers have diedafter an Atlanta Police Department helicopter crashes in Norhtwest Atlanta.Carlos Campos, with the Atlanta Police Department released awritten statement about the crash which reads, "One of our helicopters hascrashed near the intersection of MLK Jr. and Hamilton E. Holmes, around 10:30p.m. on Saturday. Public Affairs personnel are on scene and gatheringinformation."Atlanta Police Chief George Turner on the scene said thatofficers were looking for a missing child when the air unit was called in toassist. The helicopter was flying low during the search.Atlanta Police haven't released any other information atthis time, but a witness tells Channel 2 Action News she watched thechopper crash, "I noticed something falling out of the sky. It hitthe power line and it hit the ground," the woman says.Dozens of Atlanta Police units and fire officials are on thescene, along with power crews who are working to restore power. There arereports the helicopter may have hit power lines just before the crash and poweris out in the area.
The crash has knocked out power to 1,300 Georgia Powercustomers, a spokesman for the electricity company said. "We believe theoutage is because of the helicopter crash," said spokesman John Kraft."I don't know specifics of what happened in that crash. We believe it is aresult of the helicopter coming in contact with the lines at some point."
The Federal AviationAdministration and the National Transportation Safety Board are bothinvestigating.
