Louisville KY Nov 11 2012 A 46-year-old woman was shot to death Saturday in her car inthe parking lot of a Walmart store near Hillview, and police said a 44-year-oldman who is believed to be the suspect was found later at McNeely Lake, dead ofself-inflicted gunshot wound.
Carey Klain, a Louisville Metro Police Departmentspokeswoman, said police think the shooting was a domestic incident, though shecould not disclose their relationship between the suspected shooter and thevictim.
Their identities had not been released.
The shooting at 12:17 p.m. at the Walmart, 11901 Standiford Plaza Drive, prompted the store to close, and there was heavy traffic as customers left theparking lot.
Five hours later, an employee who declined to be named saidshe didn’t know when it would reopen or why the store remained closed.
Police believe the victim had been shopping at the Walmartand was loading items into the car when she was shot, Klain said. She was shotonce outside of her car, Klain said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police they saw a man flee the scene in avehicle, and the same vehicle was found at McNeely Lake. The man found dead there also matched witnesses’ descriptions, Klain said.
A portion of the parking lot at the store was cordoned off,and some customers stood nearby waiting to be able to get to their cars.
One man said he had to call someone to pick him up becausehis car was parked behind the victim’s car. Police told them he could not movehis car because of blood that had splattered onto it.
Caroline Rodriguez, 36, said she was shopping in the storewhen she began overhearing people talking about an incident outside.
“At first, you could just overhear people talking about thepolice cars and fire truck,” she said. “When I checked out, the (cashier) saidsomeone got shot. I couldn’t believe it.”
