BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC Sept 19 2012 – Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that happened Mondayafternoon involving a Brunswick County sheriff's cruiserand a motorcycle.Authorities say the accident happened at the intersection ofShingle Tree Rdand Old Ocean Highwayaround 4 p.m.According to a sheriff's office spokesperson, the driver ofthe motorcycle, Thomas Varney of Virginia, wasairlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Centerwhere he later died.The deputy involved, Adam Lockner, did not have any seriousinjuries.Officials say the motorcycle was destroyed in the crash andthe sheriff's cruise is close to totaled.Lockner was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicleand failure to yield. He has been with the sheriff's office since October,2009. Lockner has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome ofthe investigation.Troopers said the crash scene will be reconstructed onTuesday. An investigation is ongoing by the NC Highway Patrol and the BrunswickCounty Professional Standards Division of the Sheriff's Office.Source:WECT
